Freedive Papua New Guinea
Located in the centre of the coral triangle, and home to some of the healthiest coral reef systems in the world, Kimbe Bay has long been a Mecca for scuba divers. Encounter Freediving is excited to be bringing freediving to Kimbe Bay. Our accommodation will be at Walindi Plantation Resort, an intimate dive resort situated on the shores of Kimbe Bay. Accompanying you on this trip will be Michael Bates, a highly experienced Australian freediver whose extensive knowledge of PNG culture, environment and language comes from many years of in-country experience. Good company, great food, friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere provide a perfect backdrop while you enjoy the delights of Kimbe Bay freediving.

Walindi Resort, on the shores of Kimbe Bay, is a short boat trip to a variety of reef and wreck dive sites, as well as deep water for freedive line training, all in warm blue water. Our group will charter a purpose-built dive vessel through Walinidi Resort and utilise their boating and diving staff’s extensive experience with local dive sites and safety procedures.
Line training: Within a few minutes of the resort the depth drops off to 80m +, within the protected waters of Kimbe Bay, offering deep training in calm waters with little current. During the trip we will be using floats and lines for training and as such we are setting a maximum training depth of 65m. Oxygen will be available for emergency use only. All training sessions will be supervised by an experienced freediving instructor. Freediving participants must hold a certification and must use a lanyard if diving deeper than 20m.
Fun dives: Kimbe Bay is home to the largest diversity of fish and coral anywhere on the planet. Exquisite reefs of hard and soft corals provide a range of diving environments, from pinnacles coming out of deep water to shallow fringing reefs and vertical walls. Most sites have beautiful corals and interesting features at a range of depths – shallow corals and plentiful fish just below the surface descending down along deeper walls, providing great options for freedivers of all levels and snorkellers to enjoy. As well as amazing coral reefs, Kimbe is home to wrecks including that of a Japanese fighter plane from WWII. Commonly seen wildlife include a variety of fish, crustaceans and invertebrates, as well as schooling barracuda, tuna and jacks. Pods of dolphins and a range of shark species, including silvertips and hammerheads, can regularly be sighted, and rare sightings of orca, pilot whales and whale sharks are a treat for those lucky enough to see them as they pass through Kimbe Bay. Having our own chartered boat for our group will allow us to see a diversity of sites suited to the preferences of our guests.
We will stay at Walindi Plantation Resort, on the shores of beautiful Kimbe Bay on the island of New Britain. The resort offers warm hospitality, delicious meals and stunning scenery, for a relaxed and comfortable stay. There are two accommodation options available.
Plantation house rooms: The plantation house is a block of four private rooms, each with private ensuite, a shared verandah and garden views. Rooms are fully screened, have ceiling fans, a mini fridge, tea & coffee, fresh towels, toiletries and laundry service provided daily. A queen bed or two single bed configuration is available.
Bungalows: Freestanding bungalows, built with local timbers and materials, located behind the beach and surrounded by beautiful gardens. Each bungalow is fully screened, has a private balcony and ensuite. Rooms have ceiling fans, a queen and single bed, a mini fridge, tea & coffee, fresh towels, toiletries and laundry service provided daily.
Non-freediving travel companions, and freedivers on the rest day, can enjoy a range of land-based activities including nature walks and birdwatching, cultural tours to the local village, and trips to WWII plane wrecks, volcano walk and the volcanic “hot river”. Non-freedivers may also wish to join in snorkelling or SCUBA diving trips, or learn to SCUBA dive, through the resort’s dive shop. Some of these activities incur additional charges. Please enquire for additional information and fees.
We will travel from to Kimbe, via Port Moresby (the capital city of Papua New Guinea). Once in Kimbe, Walindi Resort will pick us up and take us to our accommodation. Papua New Guinea is in the same time zone as Brisbane and uses 240V power (as in Australia). Whilst English is an official language of Papua New Guinea, most people speak Melanesian Pidgin. You will be accompanied by our experienced trip leader, who is fluent in both languages.
Please note that Kimbe is a Malaria area and you should consult with your doctor about appropriate travel medications before leaving. All participants must also carry their own travel insurance, including medical evacuation insurance.
The currency of Papua New Guinea is the Kina, however Walinidi Resort also accepts payment in AUD, USD, Euro and major credit cards, should you wish to purchase anything from the gift shop, bar or additional activities during your stay.
